I am financing a car and have not paid insurance for a month. Obviously they have cancelled my policy. I have gotten pulled over and showed them my old papers, and nothing happens. How long until something “bad” happens?? By the way this is in the state of California.

I believe CA is notified of lapses using magnetic tapes which are submitted monthly. There may be a month or so lag in the data. So it could take a month or two before you get into trouble. My info is several years old, it might be much faster now.
